Brooke Candy Interview
This interview doesn’t start off very pretty. But who needs pretty when you can have raw, unadulterated conversation that’s creepier than a date rapist? Brooke Candy is probably one of the most fascinating humans I’ve never met. Basically, she documents her entire life in a San Francisco that many thought was long dead. These photos make me want to become American, and I never thought those words would ever leave my lips. All photos courtesy Brooke Candy.

TT: Hey you must really hate me. i’m serious.
BC: Hey dude i dont even know you.
TT: But we’re friends. on facebook. what’s that worth these days? nothing apparently.
BC: I just really don’t like facebook chat. I rarely chat with my closest friends let alone people I don’t even know.
TT: Well there’s always a time to start. i just wanted to ask some questions about your photos.
BC: Okay cool.

BC: What do you wanna know? everywhere.
TT: Like its sitting on your lap right now everywhere?
BC: It’s in my bag right next to me, yeah.
TT: Ok. ok. do you have a giant flash or how do you get it so bright?
BC: No I don’t have a flash I just use a 35mm point and shoot film camera I found at goodwill.
TT: Fair enough. so you always shoot film?
BC: Yeah.

BC: Wait, why are you asking me all of these questions? just curious.
TT: I was hoping i could publish them after. like an impromptu interview. and if i don’t get permission than it was just for my own personal growth. sound good?
BC: Yeah. I have been blogging and shooting photos since I was in highschool so it only seemed logical to combine the 2 and start something that would showcase how I saw the world. all of the people i hang out with are the most inspiring beautiful people. they are always my main subjects. the blog is about them and how they keep me alive.
TT: So is it accomplishing what you wanted it to? or do you have goals with it?
BC: I want the whole world to see my world — that is my goal.
TT: Do you like san francisco?
BC: It’s the most amazing city. it’s like disneyland.
TT: I always wanted to work there when i grew up.
BC: It’s the most amazing place. Can I ask you how you found my blog?
TT: That, is a good question. let me think on it for a sec… (pause) Oh, it was Andrew Chipman’s Pull Teeth blog.
BC: What’s his link?
TT: http://pullteeth.blogspot.com/ He’s from Winnipeg. And your style was just unreal. like i’ve never seen such a comprehensive “database” of photography that is so american. So then how do you decide what is the best moment to take a picture? or is it just wheely neely or whatever that saying is.
BC: The photo opportunity presents itself often with my friends and subjects. they are all eccentric individuals, so there is no need for any direction, all of the photos happen organically.
TT: Nice description. do you have any future prospects? or are you happy doing whatever it is you’re doing?
BC: I was just asked to work on an online magazine that they’re hoping will turn to print — a group of fine artists, photographers, and fashion students have been assembled in san francisco and los angeles to work on it oh and i organize rock n roll shows once a month.

BC: 20
TT: What, if any, rules do you live by?
BC: Nothing is too over the top when it comes to dressing. weed and pizza are essential to survival.
TT: I think you’d love BC.
BC: What is bc?
TT: Ahh i forgot you’re american. it’s like a “state” in the west. hahaha. british columbia?
BC: Oh i see teehee. oh and back to any rules I live by, here’s one: you’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with.
TT: Is that like stay humble?
BC: I guess you could say that:)
Brooke Candy, stay golden.
