Irina Lazareanu + Daria Werbowy
Two Canadian babes, who have been rocketed to catwalk success. Now, I tell you not of these beauts to boast how many great models have come from Canada, but merely to inform you of how many good models have come from Canada. I would really be lying if I said Canadians were as h-core patriotic as Americans, but I like to think that at least somebody out there is proud of our country. And producing hot commodities is pat-on-the-back worthy.
Up first is Irina Lazareanu, who at age 5 emigrated to Canada from Romania, settling into the Montreal suburb of Saint-Hubert, Quebec with her Romanian parents. Now we get to the interesting tidbit, Lazareanu got her ‘big break’ through her acquaintance with supermodel Kate Moss. At age 17 Lazareanu attended an open call and signed with Giovanni modelling agency in Montreal with the hopes that it would help pay rent. She then did the rounds. It wasn’t until she was chosen by acquaintance Kate Moss to model for the December/January issue of Vogue: Paris, that Lazareanu received notice by fashionistas. Lazareanu has since become an increasingly popular fashion model, breaking the record for most runway work in one season. Voilà la!
Daria Werbowy is also pretty dandy. She is Polish-born, but we Canadians love anybody of foreign cultures. COME TO CANADA! Shout-out to all you internash readers. You rock, and without you guys overseas this blog wouldn’t exist. So tell all your friends. Anyways, back the story. Daria got discovered by a friend’s mom who owned a talent agency, but quickly switched to Elite Models Canada when she wasn’t getting too much work. She found the work was picking up, but it wasn’t until Elmer Olson started IMG until she finally fell into the limelight. In July 2007, Forbes listed Werbowy as the ninth highest-earning model in the world after Karolina Kurkova, Natalia Vodianova, Carolyn Murphy, Alessandra Ambrosio, Adriana Lima, Heidi Klum, Kate Moss and Gisele Bündchen. Her earnings between June 2006 and June 2007 were in the order of $3.5 million.
On June 3, 2008, it was announced that she would be inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame.
