Less Than Zero

There is hardly any case where the movie is better than its paper counterpart, but in this case, I’d beg to differ. Although still impressive that Bret Easton Ellis wrote the book Less Than Zero when he was 23 and still in college, it doesn’t take away from the fact that it sucks. Only when translated to the screen with the likes of Robert Downey Jr. does it gain artistic merit. It’s probably the most visually stunning film I’ve seen since that Terence Malick one, The Tree of Life. When it first came out in theatres, Ellis admitted to hating the film. However, like all shitty movies that become classics, Ellis has realized it’s amazing and has grown to accept it. The sequel to the novel, Imperial Bedrooms, is set to come out in theatres next year. Dare I ruin the movie slash book by saying it’s about crazy teens on drugs? Yes, but that’s obviously its selling point. It was the book for the MTV generation, or something, back in the days when cocaine was still in Coca Cola and people drank that shit like it was 1987. Whatever, go watch the movie or read the book to help Bret Easton Ellis grow even richer.
