Iconography / Inspiration

Dear faithful readers, I was recently inspired by this young girl by the name of Tavi, at Style Rookie. Please read this post to understand her brilliance. In her post, she reveals that she dislikes the idea of “style icons” and “beauty icons”. She quips: “Immortalizing celebrities for being able to afford a decent stylist and lots of pretty dresses just doesn’t get through to me.” Very understandable. And not only does she break barriers with her views on how Nicole Kidman (a prime example, in my opinion) ought not to be idealized, she makes known that she doesn’t “really want to be beautiful, just create beautiful things.” I have been exactly that person that she talks about for quite some time, idealizing people superficially for their extremely good looks. Beauty isn’t everything, and maybe we’ve got Susan Boyle to thank. However, beauty can be inspiring. Icons, I believe, can truly alter the way we think. Whether it be Pavarotti at the Three Tenors Concert, or a modern-day driven Kanye West. As much as I write about fashion, I couldn’t care less about it. For me, it’s the people in fashion. The people who create something beyond themselves. This quote from V for Vendetta sums up how I feel about icons: “We are told to remember the idea, not the man, because a man can fail. He can be caught, he can be killed and forgotten, but 400 years later, an idea can still change the world.” That is why people still idolize the brilliance of Andy Warhol. Icons are people who do what they love, and pursue it with every thought in their mind, every feeling of their spirit. They create their persona, and take off by chance or by self-promotion. They are the people who don’t care what you think but have the guts to say what’s on their mind. They are the people who inspire creation. They are the people who can take you on such an emotional ride that your thoughts cannot escape them. They are the people who don’t forget, because they are unforgettable. Here are five unforgettable photographers:
